Election to be held in the North Ward

The Council of the Town of Bassendean will, at the Ordinary Council Meeting in September, decide whether to hold an in-person or postal ballot to fill the casual vacancy resulting from the resignation of Cr Chris Merfield.

Retiring councillor Chris Merfield

Cr Merfield was elected onto Council in May 2005 and has been a well-regarded and respected Councillor, noted for his pertinent and insightful contribution to debate. Cr Merfield resigned on 27 August due to work and family commitments.

“Only residents in the North Ward will be impacted by the resignation,” said Cr Tina Klein, Mayor of the Town.

The casual vacancy will be to complete the term of office that lapses at the date of the Local Government elections in October 2009.

“The election process includes bringing up-to-date the roll of electors, calling for nominations and undertaking the ballot,” said Acting CEO, Graeme Haggart. “The Mayor will nominate the date for the election once Council has determined the method,” he added.

“All steps in the process will be advertised once Council has made up its mind whether to engage the Electoral Commission to conduct the ballot,” added Cr Klein.

In accordance with the Local Government Act 1995, the election is required to be conducted within 4 months of the date of the vacancy.
