Ashfield Community Action Plan taking shape
The Town of Bassendean is working in partnership with the residents of Ashfield in deciding what sort of future residents want for their community and developing an action plan to enhance Ashfield in the coming years.
The Ashfield Community Action Plan (ACAP) will reflect the aspirations of all concerned and will identify specify actions that will be taken to improve the wellbeing of the community in Ashfield.
“The ACAP is one of several initiatives that we have taken to plan for Ashfield’s future. In previous years we developed the ‘Vision 2030: Community Plan’ and the ‘Strategic Plan 2007 – 2017’ which provides the strategic direction for the Town of Bassendean. The ACAP will take this vision and plan further to determine what actions will be taken to achieve these in Ashfield,” said Town of Bassendean Mayor, Cr Tina Klein. “By working in partnership to identify a common vision we can ensure a vibrant future for Ashfield.”
To assist Council and residents in the development of the ACAP, GHD Consultants have been appointed and will be facilitating the community workshop and focus groups that are being organised. Residents of Ashfield will have received a letter inviting them to become a part of the process.
A Community Workshop was held on Saturday 13 September in the Ashfield Primary School Library, 65 Margaret Street, Ashfield, with members of the community participating. The progress of the Plan will be reported in Bassendean Briefings.

Town of Bassendean doing something fishy on your street
In the coming weeks you may see yellow fish symbols painted next to stormwater drains in your street as part of the Yellow Fish Stormwater Drain program.
This program aims to raise awareness of the link between stormwater drains and natural waterways via the stencilling of street stormwater drains, and will serve to remind the community that unwanted litter and household products should not be dumped down stormwater drains.
Water entering road gullies flows into drainage sumps where the water can soak away into the soil or into waterways, such as lakes, rivers, estuaries or the ocean. In Bassendean the stormwater drains lead primarily into the Swan River. Chemicals such as oil, pesticides and detergents can poison plants and animals that live in waterways. Nutrients such as phosphates from fertilisers, animal waste and some household cleaners increase the growth of undesirable floating algae, which uses up all the oxygen in the water, suffocating fish and other water animals. Some blue-green algae are toxic and make the water poisonous to animals and unsuitable for swimming and other water activities.
Yellow Fish flyers will be posted to residents, and posters placed around the Town. These provide information on how individuals and groups can make positive behavioural changes.

Art Exhibition
Fantastic! Marvellous! Wonderful! Fabulous! Great Stuff!
These were some of the words that described this year’s Art Exhibition and Awards. During four days in August, the Cyril Jackson Recreation Centre became the Town of Bassendean’s Art Gallery and housed a fantastic collection of artwork from artists across the metropolitan area and from as far away as Albany. Over a thousand people attended the exhibition, to not only view the general exhibition, but also the Junior Art Exhibition incorporated in this year’s event for the first time.
Special thanks is extended to the dedicated group of hard working volunteers who assisted throughout the exhibition and also to the SES for keeping a close eye on the artwork to ensure its safety.
The winner of this year’s popular choice award was the Forking Chook by Shaun McGrath (a local artist 18 years old) and the Junior popular choice was won by Zoe Roberts with her drawing of the Eiffel Tower (featured in a July issue of the Eastern Suburb Reporter).

The Town of Bassendean, in conjunction with the EMRC, is hosting a team lifecycle that will mark the start of the 11th Australian Transplant Games. Members of the community are encouraged to attend this free event as they cycle to raise awareness about organ and tissue donation. The Town of Bassendean Team Life Cycle will take place at Sandy Beach Reserve commencing at 9.30am for a 9.45am departure. There will be no registration cost and prior registration is not required. The community is asked to simply arrive on the morning and register on the day of the event. A breakfast/morning tea will be provided to all participants who will ride to Langley Park in support of Organ and Tissue Donation, for the opening of The Australian Transplant Games.
The Australian Transplant Games are a wonderful celebration of life and provide ‘living proof’ that organ and tissue donation works and allows recipients to return to a productive and fulfilling life. Importantly, the games promote awareness of organ donation and encourage the community to discuss organ donation with their family.
