Sculpture Park Exhibition

The Town of Bassendean took ‘art to the park’ for its inaugural outdoor Sculpture Park Exhibition held at Sandy Beach Reserve in West Road, Bassendean, from 1–11 April.

The exhibition was held as part of Perth’s Autumn Festival and involved seven sensational sculptures on display by emerging and experienced West Australian artists, including artists from Bassendean.

Town of Bassendean Mayor, Cr Tina Klein, said, “The exhibition was a great success with an estimated 600 people attending, and in addition to the sculptures being displayed, there was also a range of free activities and performances held at the reserve”.

The Town’s first permanent public art sculpture was installed at Sandy Beach Reserve during the exhibition. Titled Tree of Life it was commissioned from a young local artist, Daniel Iley. The artwork draws on historical references to the site; the many ways the community accesses and uses the reserve today; and it acknowledges the birds and other creatures that live in the area.

Everyone is encouraged to wander down to the reserve and see the Tree of Life sculpture.

Public artworks to be installed within the Town

The Town has recently acquired two sculptures to add to its public artwork collection. Both of these sculptures will be installed in the Town’s reserves shortly.

Earth, Sun & Moon by Jason Maxlow

The sculpture is based on the number 3 and the cycle of regenerations—birth, life and death. Spirals painted in the three primary colours appear as the unfurling of fronds, representing the ancient feminine symbol, and the Triskele & Fibonacci mathematical sequence.

Rock Bottom by Maris Raudzins

This sculpture is based upon that experience of doing a ‘bombie’—hitting the water feet first and going as deep as one could. It draws on memories of growing up on the opposite side of the river in a place known as ‘The Cliffs’. The river narrows and deepens while it bends around Garvey Park, then shallows out again.
