Parental care required at all playgrounds

As a follow-up to the Public Open Space Strategy the Town is preparing a ten year playground upgrading program.

The Town has thirty parks with play equipment and the program recommends that the larger district parks have 5 or more pieces of play equipment, neighbourhood parks have 3–5 pieces and local parks are installed with 1–3 pieces. Rubberised softfall is recommended to be implemented in larger parks over the 10 year program. This will enhance the play spaces in the Town for the use of families and children to enjoy.

As a community safety measure the Town has a program of regularly checking playground equipment and of cleaning the softfall sand in the play spaces on a programmed basis. An annual audit by an external body is carried out once a year in addition to the Town’s inspection program to maximise safety.

When using any play space in the Town, or in any other local government for that matter, parents are urged to check that the equipment is in a safe condition prior to use and that there are no hazardous materials in the softfall which could pose a safety threat to your child. Despite the Town’s best efforts, vandalism to equipment and thoughtless acts by antisocial people compromising child safety do occur from time to time. Parents need to be vigilant and to check the safety of the play area prior to use and report any problems to the Town’s Rangers on 9337 7480 or Customer Service Centre staff on 9377 8000.
