The tapes and transcript for the interview with Laurie Nicoletto have also been received.

A preliminary interview with Joanne Parfitt has been carried out by Mrs Laurie.

RATE BOOKS AND BASSENDEAN MAGNET INDEXES

Lesley Sinclair and Shirley Babis continue to add data to these indexes regularly. David Blampey has now started doing some indexing of the rate books and Mim Plunkett and Margaret Pearce have been contacted with regard to their working together on the rate book index.

LETTER TO LOCAL ORGANISATIONS

The response to the letter requesting material engendered by local bodies has been disappointing. Only 5 of the 25 organizations written to, have made contact with Ms Leigh. These are the Arthritis Exercise Club, Swan Districts Football Club, the Bassendean Brass Band, Bassendean Melody Club and the Ashfield Soccer Club.

NEW SCANNER

The scanner bought for the Local Studies Collection in 2002 is failing to operate properly. It is a vital piece of equipment for the Local Studies Librarian and therefore the purchase of a new one is a high priority. Ms Leigh has asked Peter Barker, Information Technology Officer, for advice on a suitable model.

Under consideration will be a good quality but simple machine, manufactured by a reputable company which will accommodate items up to A3 size.

SHIRE OF WILUNA LOCAL HISTORY COLLECTION

Debbie McNeill who is investigating the establishment of a local history collection at Wiluna visited Ms Leigh on 8 May to discuss ways of developing and organizing the existing material. She is particularly interested in doing oral histories with Aborigines in the area. Ms Leigh gave her references to some guides on how to go about this and she also referred her to an oral historian who has extensive expertise in interviewing Aborigines for oral history programs.

INAUGURAL LIBRARY HISTORY LECTURE

Ms Leigh is busy researching and writing this talk which will take place at the Library on Wednesday 25 June at 7.30pm. She is to speak about what it was like to be living in Bassendean in the early decades of the 20th century and will be illustrating her talk with photographs from the Local Studies Collection.

ENQUIRIES

History of the West Guildford Orchestral Society – the Collection has 6 photographs, 2 concert programmes, a short historical note and some entries in The Bassendean Magnet

Swan River foreshore – information required by a research worker studying for an Honours degree in Geography. The Collection has a number of reports that were helpful to him

Anne Hall of the Bassendean Day Care Centre requested a brief history of Bassendean and some photographs for a talk she plans to give to at the Centre. She was given a brief history compiled by Ms Leigh and some photographs were copied on to a CD for her.

A history of St Joseph’s Catholic Church is being written and the researcher was able to obtain several photographs and a few references to the church. He also found some of the oral histories done by Jennie Carter in the early 1980’s extremely helpful as some of these interviews had focussed on residents who were very involved with the parish.

The Manager Library and Information Services undertook to investigate advertising the inaugural Library history lecture in the Eastern Reporter either by placing an advertisement or by way of a story. He further undertook to speak with the local schools with a view to mentioning it in their newsletters this week.

COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION – ITEM 8.2(a)

LSCC – 2/06/08     MOVED Mr Bridges, Seconded Cr Butler, that approval be granted to upgrade the scanner subject to the cost being within the Budget.
