MAPS

David Blampey has encapsulated 12 maps in Mylar sheets using double-sided archival tape. These maps have been selected because they are especially historically interesting and rare.

ORAL HISTORY

The transcript for the interview with Roy Weatherburn has been received.

Laurie Nicoletto has been contacted by Ms Leigh and is happy to participate in the oral history program. Ms Leigh has been given Mr Nicoletto’s details and indicated that she would contact him soon, to arrange a time for the preliminary interview.

Gwen Fenech does not want to be interviewed, so the Committee needs to select another candidate from names put forward by the Bassendean Historical Society.

These are: Robbie Gaunt (plumbing), Michael Grogan (Bassendean family connections), John Willis (Bassendean family connections), Tina Klein (local government) and Allan Caddy (library and local history collection).

LETTER TO LOCAL ORGANISATIONS

A letter has been sent out to 25 local organization and groups. It lets them know that there is a Local Studies Collection in the Library and asks if they have any items which they could make available to the library as a donation, or that could be copied for the collection. Items suggested, included brief histories, photographs, newsletters, flyers, leaflets and newspaper clippings.

There have been three replies so far and below is the text of the response from the Arthritis Exercise Group.

“Dear Carol

Thank you for your letter wishing to have any news of our group. I have enclosed a copy of an article that was in the local paper in 1999. Margaret Kirkpatrick took over as leader in 1991. I took over as secretary of the branch the same year. We still meet every week, cannot hold stalls any more and still have a membership of 15. It has dropped a little owing to health and age. We are still a happy group, we have occasional guest speakers when available, always go into recess in November and have a Christmas lunch to finish off the year.

I hope this has been useful to you.

Mrs. Myrtle Brammall

Hon. Secretary”

EASTERN REPORTER

The 2007 issues of this newspaper have been filmed on to microfiche and have been collected from Westnet.

ENQUIRIES

  • The rate book index has proved its worth again when there was another house history enquiry. This was for a house in Railway Parade and a search of the index showed the name of the probable first owner in 1912/1913. The researcher was given a copy of the 2nd edition of How to Trace the History of your House and was advised that she needed to go to Landgate to confirm this information, by obtaining the first Certificate of Title for the property.

Interestingly, some maps were very helpful with this enquiry and with the re-organisation of the map collection, locating and consulting them is now a quick and easy process.

  • The obituaries editor of The West Australian asked for access to the transcript of the late Georgina Gipson’s oral history interview. Her family gave their permission and the transcript was sent to him electronically.

Discussion took place on further possibilities for oral histories.

COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION – ITEM 8.1(a)

LSCC – 1/03/08         MOVED Mr Bridges, Seconded Cr Butler, that Joanne Parfitt and May O’Brien be approached as potential future oral histories, with the Manager Library and Information Services providing more research and information to the next meeting.
