NOTICE OF A MEETING OF THE

LOCAL STUDIES COLLECTION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

A meeting of the Local Studies Collection Management Committee is to be held in the Council Chamber, 48 Old Perth Road, Bassendean, on Thursday, 5 November 2009, commencing at 9.00am.

1.0                                   DECLARATION OF OPENING/ANNOUNCEMENT OF VISITORS

2.0                                   ELECTION OF PRESIDING MEMBER AND DEPUTY PRESIDING MEMBER

The Committee’s Instrument of Appointment & Delegation states that the Committee shall appoint a Presiding Member and Deputy Presiding Member to conduct its business. The Presiding Member shall ensure that minutes of the proceedings are kept and that business is conducted in accordance with the Town of Bassendean Standing Orders (Local Law No 1).

As this is the first Committee meeting since the Local Government Elections held in October 2009, the positions for Presiding Member and Deputy Presiding Member must be decided.

The CEO will be in attendance to conduct the election of the Presiding Member in accordance with the Local Government Act 1995 – Schedule 2.3.

The Presiding Member will then call for nominations for Deputy Presiding Member.

Nominations must be made in writing (nomination form attached) and a secret ballot will be conducted to decide the positions.

9.1               Local Studies Librarian’s Report

VISITS

The Local Studies Librarian visited the property known as Halliday House (Leighton) in the City of Bayswater on 25 October.

The Local Studies Librarian will attend the Local Studies Seminar at the State Library on 6 November. Its theme is Bringing History Out of Hiding: going digital and sharing your local history collection. The key note speaker will be Dr Mark Brogan from Edith Cowan University.

COLLECTION MANAGEMENT

Rate Books index entries= 22488 (in total 21 rate books completed)

Newspapers and periodical indexing= 35

The Local Studies Librarian met local filmmaker Justin M. Jefferies and obtained copies of his work including DVD’s on Rolf Harris (Bassendean and Beyond), Reflections (Midland Workshops), Bassendean Archaeological Dig .

EMRC 25th Anniversary Annual Report 2008-2009

Newspaper articles from early Western Australia newspapers via National Library website.

Bronwyn Lewis from SLWA – State Library Foundation came to talk about a new initiative for Local Studies with Manager Library and Information Services. Our Page in History will be launched officially on 24 November 2009.

ORAL HISTORY

The Local Studies Librarian has been ensuring that the TOB complies with its legislative requirements in obtaining permissions for the oral history interviews which have formerly been undertaken. Written permission of subjects is in the process of being obtained. The oral history program is otherwise ongoing.

PROMOTION

A “Seniors Week” display in the Library is promoting the Bassendean Historical Society Inc. and the monthly opening of the Pensioner Guard Cottage. Artefacts identified in the archaeological digs are on display with relevant documentation.

ANNUAL HISTORY LECTURE

Progress is being made in producing the DVD of the annual history lecture with Entity Media. It is intended to be completed by end of January 2010.

ENQUIRIES

A student required information contained in TOB annual reports for her university assignment.

An Ashfield resident wanted access to historical maps about Ashfield. Two items were available for viewing in the map collection and he was referred to Landgate.

A member of the public was interested in the location of the former Bassendean Baptist Church on James Street. Information sourced from Bassendean: A Social History and maps within the collection. Referral to two publications by the Baptist Historical Society of Western Australia.

Members of the public interested in the location of Rolf Harris’ house.

A member of the public requested to purchase a copy of early Ashfield map and was referred to Landgate.
