8.1               Local Studies Librarian’s Report (Janet Megarrity)

ASSESSMENT OF THE COLLECTION

Assessment of Local Studies Collection using the Australian Historical Themes Framework is continuing. The reference collection, main collection and oral history collection, ephemera and fragile ephemera collections and serials have been assessed. The photographic collection is currently being assessed. Newspapers have been microfilmed according to the Collection Management Plan.

Information about the Bassendean Bicentennial has been received. Two books about the history of the Midland Railway workshops have been obtained.

Government Gazette notices regarding the name changes of the West Guildford Road Board to Town of Bassendean, have been obtained.

Copies of the investiture and acceptance speeches for Gwendolyn Fenech’s investiture as a Freeman of the Town of Bassendean, have been received.

Defective images on the Library Catalogue have been examined and 35 have been fixed without rescanning.

VISIT

The Local Studies Librarian visited the East Guildford Cemetery in order to become more familiar with local historical sites of interest.

The Local Studies Librarian intends to attend the office launch of the interpretive signage installation at the Pensioner Guard Cottage on Sunday 22 February at 2pm. She hopes to obtain a suitable photographic record of the events.

ORAL HISTORY

Progress is being made on the interview with Mr Arthur Leggett.

The Local Studies entry in the National Directory of Australia’s Oral History has been updated to reflect staff changes and additions to the Local Studies Oral History Collection since 2006.

The Oral History Collection now contains 75 oral history interviews.

RATEBOOKS AND BASSENDEAN MAGNET INDEXES

Lesley Sinclair, Shirley Babis and David Blampey continue to add data to these indexes regularly. The indexers are now busy with the 16th ratebook.

ENQUIRIES

Information regarding Freemen of the Town of Bassendean was requested. Information sources relating to other Freemen including Rolf Harris, John Cox, John Paterson and Mervyn John Woods, were examined and photographs, copies of certificates, archives and biographical information were obtained from the collection.

Material on the beginnings of the Maltese Association was sought and a patron was referred to the Battye Library and Private Archives.

Information sought relating to a local house by new owners keen to renovate. Information of the first owner was located in rates books, not found in MHI or Bassendean: A Social History. How to Trace the History of Your House: A Guide was provided to the residents.

SCHEDULE OF FEES AND CHARGES

Staff reviewed the existing schedule of Fees and Charges for 2009/10 and it is recommended that the prices remain at the existing rates.

It is recommended that the Annual Library History Lecture be included and priced at a cost recovery basis.

OFFICER RECOMMENDATION – ITEM 8.1

That:

1.           The Local Studies Librarian’s Report be received; and

2.           The Library Fees listed in the Draft 2009/10 Schedule of Fees and Charges remain at the existing rates, with the addition of the Annual Library History Lecture.
