8.1               Library Lecture 2008 DVD – Copies for Primary Schools)

Report Summary

  • The Library has been involved in presenting four local studies oriented talks in the past few years.
  • Most, if not all, of these lectures were recorded in one form or another.
  • The 2008 Lecture has been successfully recorded in DVD format.
  • A complimentary copy being lodged with each of the primary schools in the Town, is recommended.

PURPOSE

To recommend to the Committee that it provides a multimedia copy of the 2008 Annual Library History Lecture to each of the primary schools in the Town of Bassendean.

BACKGROUND

The Library, in conjunction with the Bassendean Historical Society Inc, has conducted a total of four lectures to the community. They represent an excellent resource for raising awareness of the history of the local area in line with the Commonwealth government direction towards a national history curriculum.

Four lectures to date were presented by Professor Tom Stannage (2002), Mr Eric McCrum, Ms Val Fitch and Ms Carol Leigh (2008).

Where possible it is intended to transfer all the materials into a standardised format (ie DVD) for easy access by students.

RELEVANT LAW AND POLICY

Local Govt Act 1995

CONSULTATION

The Local Studies Librarian conferred on this matter with the Manager Library and Information Services.

SUSTAINABILITY & STRATEGIC PLAN ALIGNMENT

This report has a medium strategic impact.

Environmental Enhancement: Community Wellbeing:

Raising awareness of the activities and existence of the Bassendean Local Studies Collection and its partner the Bassendean Historical Society Inc, makes a major contribution to community well being in an historical sense.

Economic Vitality & Financial Considerations: Leadership in Business Excellence:

Providing historical information in a multimedia format is proactive and contributes to the resource base of our local educational institutions.

RISK MANAGEMENT

The Library was the agency undertaking the records and therefore holds copyright. There is no perceived legal impediments to providing copies of these DVD’s.

Electronically Stored Information

OPTIONS

The Committee can elect not to provide a copy of the DVD to local primary schools. This is not a preferred or recommended option.

In providing a copy of the DVD to local primary schools, the Committee will be raising awareness of the existence and work of the Local Studies Collection, provide a unique educational resource and help engage children in the local history experience.

COMMENT

Costs for this exercise are expected to be minimal as we would be transferring information from one format to another. It is expected that all existing Library History Lectures will in time be available for distribution to the schools. This precedent would be sustainable for future Annual Library History Lectures.

OFFICER RECOMMENDATION – ITEM 8.1

That a copy of the Annual Library History Lecture be generated in DVD format and distributed complimentarily to all six primary schools within the Town of Bassendean.

Football

Bill Walker

Chapter 11 in Swan Districts Football History on website http://www.swandistrictsfc.com/index.php?id=39

Bill Walker is one Swan Districts identity who has done just about everything possible in the game of football. He was a champion rover, registering a record 305 games between 1961 and 1976 and won a number of awards along the way.

Walker was 19 when he first arrived at Bassendean from the country town of Narembeen to try his luck at league football. The year was 1961 and Swans had finished last the previous year. When he pulled on the now famous number 29 for the first time, he had no idea what the future held for him. That year the Club won the first of three consecutive premierships. Walker having had a taste of success was keen to play in more winning grand final teams.

When Bill finally retired as a player in July 1976 he had earned every accolade possible in West Australian football. He had won three Sandover Medals in 1965, 66 and 67 (he was later awarded retrospectively another medal after losing on a count back in 1970), played in three premierships and won a Simpson Medal in 1967 playing against South Australia in a state match and became an All-Australian player in 1969.

He also kicked 456 goals and is third on the list of Swans players to have kicked 200 goals or more. Walker also won five club fairest and best awards on five occasions, was captain of the Club for three years and captain for an additional four years. In 1982 he was also awarded the Order of Australia for his services to football. He also served as President of the club between 1983 and 1995 overseeing premierships in 1983, 84 and 90. In 1985, Walker was honoured with life membership of the WAFL in 1985 and was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 1996.

There is no question that Bill Walker is one of the club's favourite sons. In 2004 Walker was an inductee to the inaugural WAFL Hall of Fame.
