INAUGURAL LIBRARY HISTORY LECTURE

This took place on Wednesday 25 June and was a most successful occasion. There was a good response from the public with 61 people attending. Library staff have received some very complimentary feedback about the evening. This has included several requests for further talks on Bassendean’s history.

ORAL HISTORY

The interview with Ms Joanne Parfitt has been postponed. Ms Parfitt is to contact Ms Leigh in approximately six weeks with regard to setting a date to carry out the full interview.

Ms Leigh has telephoned John van Hoek to enquire whether he would like to be the next interviewee in the program and he is very happy to participate. Maxine Laurie will contact him shortly. He has had a long association with the Ashfield Soccer Club.

ORAL HISTORY CONFERENCE

The Western Australian branch of the Oral History Association of Australia is holding its annual conference at Notre Dame University in Broome from 19-21 July 2008. Ms Leigh is attending this and it should prove to be most interesting and informative, with a range of people experienced in the field, addressing the theme, Oral Histories: Revealing Hidden Histories, with emphasis on the Kimberley region.

RATE BOOKS AND BASSENDEAN MAGNET INDEXES

Lesley Sinclair, Shirley Babis and David Blampey continue to add data to these indexes regularly. Efforts to obtain more volunteers for this project have so far been unsuccessful.

The indexers are now busy with the14th rate book.

LETTER TO LOCAL ORGANISATIONS

The Bassendean Preservation Group has made contact and is now sending material regularly via e-mail. The Bassendean Melody Club is also doing the same.

NEW SCANNER

A Canon Canoscan LiDE 600F scanner has been purchased and installed and seems to be very suitable for the needs of the Collection. It cost $259.00, including charges for delivery.

DISPLAY

The idea of displaying material from the Local Studies Collection at the Town’s Fair on 5 and 6 December is being worked on.

ENQUIRIES

  • Photographs of the Bassendean homestead – collection has 7 photographs.
  • 43A North Road – query as to when the house was built. The Rate book index records a dwelling first there in 1916/1917. Resident maintains it was built much earlier and I have referred her to the State Records Office to view sewerage plans.
  • Information about the history of the house at 34 Anzac Terrace which used to be a mixed use dwelling – both a shop and a residence. Rate books, files in the records of the Town and the post office directories had some details.

The Local Studies Librarian tabled a report on her attendance at the Annual Conference of the Oral History Association of Australia (copy attached).

It was noted that both travel and accommodation expenses to attend the Conference were met by Ms Leigh personally according to the Town’s policy.

COMMITTEE/OFFICER RECOMMENDATION – ITEM 8.1(a)

LSC – 1/08/08            MOVED Cr Butler, Seconded Mr Grogan, that the Local Studies Librarian’s Report be received.

CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 4/0

The Manager Library and Information Services tabled a series of bookmarks outlining the Northbridge History Project and a copy of “Our Town” book depicting photographs from the Town of Vincent for the Committee’s information.

The Local Studies Librarian tabled a brochure for the Committee’s consideration, in relation to a competition being run by the Town of Victoria Park for which there are two categories - Personal Memoires and Original Research and for which prizes will be awarded. She further tabled an Awards 08 brochure which is a similar competition being run by the Town of Vincent.

Cr Brinkworth left the Chamber, the time being 9.45am and returned at 9.46pm.

The competition invites residents to record their story within guidelines. The stories are added to the Local Studies Collection, thus expanding the scope and depth of the Collection.
