ASHFIELD-UNDERGROUND POWER COMMENCES FEBRUARY 2012
In early 2010 the Town of Bassendean submitted an expression of interest application to the Office of Energy and Western Power for the undergrounding of Power in Ashfield.
As part of the application and independent consulting firm conduct an “Ashfield” ratepayer survey and 72.9% of respondents indicated they were in favour of underground power and prepared to contribute financially.
In late December 2010, the Minister for Energy, Peter Collier MLC advised that 89 Expression on Interest applications from 19 Councils applied for underground power from around Western Australia and that the “Ashfield” application was successful.
Since that time the Office of Energy, Western Power and Town of Bassendean have provided the affected ratepayers and residents with regular newsletters on the progress of the project.
On Tuesday 13 December 2011 Council agreed to raise a loan for $2,130,346 which is 35% of the Western Power project budget of $6,086,702. The Town of Bassendean loan will be over a 4 year period and a levy will apply on all affected ratepayers using a specified area rate with a fixed cost to each property in order to repay the loan.
Recently an Information Newsletter was provided to the Ashfield property owner and residents to inform that that the Underground Power project was due to commence in early February 2012 and that it is anticipated that all of the associated underground works will be completed by January 2013 and provided a map that illustrated the works program.
The Town of Bassendean Council has previously acknowledged the benefit of improved power reliability, and improved streetscape amenity. Mayor John Gangell recently said that “The Town welcomes the commencement of round 5 of the State Underground Power Project and that once complete, more reliable power supplies, improve street lighting will be provided” He also said that once the underground power was completed that “the Town will also reduce the need for street tree pruning and the overall appearance of the area will be improved.”
