General information

Council elections

Councillors of the Town of Bassendean are elected by persons registered on the Council electoral roll and elections are conducted in accordance with the Local government act and associated regulations. The Mayor of the Town of Bassendean is elected by the Council from amongst the Councillors.

The community elects councillors for a term of four years at general elections held every second year. voting at Council elections in not compulsory. The  Town of Bassendean has adopted a postal voting system as the preferred method of casting votes.

 

General Meeting of Electors

A General Meeting of Electors is held once each year at a time and place that is advised in the local community newspaper. The purpose of this meeting is to present the Annual Report and the Auditor’s Report to the electors.

Include committees such as the Access and Inclusion Committee, Audit & Risk Management Committee, Bassendean Local Studies Collection Management Committee, Children and Family Services Committee, Cultural Development Advisory Committee, Cyril Jackson Physical Education & Community Recreation Centre Management Committee, Economic Development Advisory Committee, Local Emergency Management Committee, Old Perth Roads Markets Committee, Seniors’ Week Co-ordinating Committee and the Youth Advisory Council.

Community Events

photo of bouncy castle Every year, the Town of Bassendean offers a wide variety of popular public events, many of which attract thousands of attendees. Following are the main events that tourists and visitors may wish to participate in:

 

  • Australia Day Celebration and Fireworks - 26 January
  • Sculpture Park Exhibition - March
  • Multicultural Food Fair and Fireworks Festival - March
  • ANZAC Day Service at the War Memorial - 25 April
  • NAIDOC Family Day - July
  • Bassendean Visual Art Awards - September
  • Bassendean Festival - November
  • Carols by Candlelight - December

Clubs Connect

The Town of Bassendean's clubs development program Clubs Connect aims to provide support and guidance for local sport and recreation Clubs and organisations. Clubs who register in the Clubs Connect Program and attend all 4 development seminars are eligible for sports equipment vouchers.

Clubs Connect provides of a range of services for clubs and organisations including:

  • A series of Clubs Development seminars and workshops
  • E-News email updates
  • Clubs details displayed on Town of Bassendean Website
  • Bassendean Sports Achievement Awards.

Leisure Courses

The Town of Bassendean provides a range of leisure courses for the local community to enjoy. The courses are divided into four categories Creative Zone, Lifestyle, Healthy Living and Active Living and provide the opportunity to partake in various activities such as tennis coaching or pond boat making. Citizenship Ceremonies

A Citizenship Ceremony is always held on Australia Day (26 January) and this ceremony includes the presentation of the Premier’s Active Australia Day Citizen, Young Citizen, and Community Group of the Year Awards.

Citizenship ceremonies are also held in April, July and October each year.  Residents are notified once the Department of Immigration & Citizenship has advised that they are eligible to receive their Australian Citizenship.
